J.T. Basque Bar & Dining Room – Gardnerville, NV

The J.T. Basque Bar & Dining Room in Gardnerville (Douglas County) is a 125 plus year old building originally built in Virginia City and moved to Gardnerville in the 1890s. It has served as a staple in downtown as a hotel, saloon and dining hall. Unsure about the hotel functions at this time. However it is still certainly a local’s dining favorite for lunch and dinner.

Originally established in 1955 as a sheepherder hotel, bar and dining room and named for the owners at the time, the Jaunsaras and Trounday families, the J.T. In 1960 it was purchased by ancestors (Jean, Jean’s wife Shirley and Jean’s brother Pete Lekumberrys) of the current proprietors, it has operated and has remained in operation since and many times “Best Basque Restaurant” in the Carson Valley.

The Lekumberry brothers immigrated from the Basque Pyrenees Mountains area in France. The Lekumberry family restored the building’s facade to look as it did over 100 years ago. So even if you don’t get the opportunity to enjoy the cuisine, photography buffs will love the building as subject for their portfolio and tourists will want a picture in front of the historic building for their memories. Please note, the hitching post and the horse are not currently available.
